After 30 years of working in many and various occupations, I found that my true career is playing in the mud.  Clay is my conduit to unexplored art forms.  Much of my work is created by rolling the clay into a “slab” and then shaping it using ancient hand-building methods.  I’m interested in exploring form over function, allowing the clay to dictate the final outcome of my work rather than copying from nature or some object that already exists.  I have found that on any given day, the clay “knows.”  I am also interested in the chemical process, and transition that the firing creates.  The results of my interaction, my play with clay, are strong distinctive pieces, vibrant and animated.          cate valk
